"BACK IN BLACK"

The Fine Art of a Fine Car

Decades into my career as a fine artist, I found myself meandering around the plaza in downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico one fine blue-and-gold October morning. Camera in hand, I was deliriously snapping away, feeling totally joyful to be surrounded by

vintage Porsche automobiles from all over the country. They'd converged there

for a weekend show and the atmosphere was festive and lively.

Personally unfamiliar with the intricacies of particular models or variations, all I knew was that simply being able to look at those sleek automotive forms felt like a gift to me. Right then and there, I decided that someday I'd create a series of paintings

that highlight select portions of those glorious machines;

segments that in their close-up part(s) convey to the viewer

so much about the whole.

"BACK IN BLACK", the title of this painting, is also the name of a well-known rock song

by the band, AC/DC, which debuted in 1980. Even though I'd not heard it for years, it began playing in my mind as I painted this canvas. Magically enough, a random video

of Golden Tempo, the 2026 winner of both the Kentucky Derby and the

Belmont Stakes, also popped up on my Facebook news feed

with the same tune playing.

In this Year of the Horse, be it four-legged or four-wheeled, power is power,

whether at the Indianapolis 500, or a Triple Crown horse race.

Imagine parking this beauty on a wall where you can see it as often as you please. Where you're able to simply sit and stare at it for no reason at all, other than that it gives you

a curious kind of joy to do so.
