Inspired by Garth Brooks' 2005 hit song, "Good Ride Cowboy", a lively boot-scootin' tune about life in general, and, more to the point, the life of Chris Ledoux, a singer-songwriter, sculptor, and rodeo Hall Of Fame champion!

When offered the opportunity to have my artwork used for a second year as the official poster for Rodeo De Santa Fe's 66th Annual PRCA event in 2015,
I already knew exactly what I'd paint.
While not intended as a portrait of Ledoux, per se; still, the main figure is a bare-back bronc rider, as was the famous cowboy.  Working from photos I'd shot at the rodeo the previous year, I sketched out the main figure on his mount, and then whipped in the background.  Again, I wasn't aiming for photo-realism, but more the excitement of being at the rodeo.  I also took care to depict the facial features of the cowboy, especially striving to express his intense concentration while riding a four-footed hurricane, including the appearance of jaw clenched around his mouth guard.
As for the rough stock bronc, I've closely studied these creatures that are bred for the sole purpose of bucking as hard as they possibly can.

In fact, I'd sauntered around behind the bucking shoots just after the broncs and bulls had arrived the night before the rodeo began, and noted the soft eyes in many of the four-footed athletes. Load them into the bucking chute, though, and they're all business!

When it comes to adding details to any of my works of art, not a single thing ends up there by accident.  As a visual fine artist, my job is to communicate exactly why I chose to paint each subject, no matter the genre: landscape, still life, portrait, or in this instance, a freeze-frame moment in the midst of all that bucking and snorting and hell-raising dust, with fringed chaps airborne and spurs raking for the best ride possible.  All in a fleeting 8 seconds!

And isn't  that exactly why we all love rodeo?
These rare official posters of my rodeo art are limited in number.  Perfectly col-lectible, they are an ideal gift for all rodeo lovers.  Hand-signed by the artist.
