The well-known country song, "My Maria", a favorite of mine, was playing in my truck the first time I met this pretty little burro. Residing in a pen, with another of her kind, on the edges of a tiny village in rural northern New Mexico, the jenny came running to the fence that bordered the dirt lane, braying up a storm as I rolled to a stop.
I reached to turn the music off so that she and I could have a proper conversation; however, as soon as silence ensued, she hung her head and looked so mournful that I was surprised. On impulse, I turned on the cd player again to the same song, and the burro's head came up instantly as her ears swiveled alertly toward me. Eyes twinkling, she appeared to smile happily.
Thinking I must be imagining her reaction to my choice of music, I punched up a different song on that same album, only to watch as she immediately turned away. I could swear her expression clearly communicated impatience that I was so slow to get what she was trying to tell me: Her name was Maria!
I never met Maria's two-leggeds, who might have corroborated her insistence about her name. As for her pen mate, another jenny, she appeared distinctly disinterested in making my acquaintance during the months that I would regularly stop and visit with the sweet burro, Maria. I'm sure she recognized the sound of my truck approaching long before I arrived at her pen, even though she refused to be her usual engaging self with me until I played at least a snippet of "My Maria" for her.
